Why So Many Climate Change Deniers?
In July, The Ashkin Group will focus on why so many people in our country deny climate change.
As always, we will not take a political position on this issue. Our goal is to present credible reasons as to why this is happening.
Let us start with the views of Elizabeth Arnold, a reporter and journalist for more than 35 years. Born in Alaska, she has witnessed the impact of climate change on her state firsthand.
She believes one reason for so many climate change deniers is how the media discusses the topic.
Among her thoughts are the following:
The media focuses on gloom and doom. Over time, this desensitizes readers to the subject.
The media needs to highlight what is being accomplished to address climate change.
Journalists waste their time trying to convert people who do not believe in climate change. Their job is to report the facts and tell a complete story of what is happening.
Many climate change stories are about global weather changes, sea ice, glaciers, and ocean temperatures. These stories are not relatable to most people here at home.
We need to put a human face on climate change stories. Who are the researchers? Why is she studying climate change? How have they been impacted?
Too many climate change stories focus on politics, social and economic issues. What is missing is how climate change also impacts sports, entertainment, demographics, and people’s lives.
Related to this, we must make climate change personal. Talk about the coal miner who has changed his life and is now installing solar panels.
Related to this, remind people that installing solar panels is the fastest-growing occupation in the U.S. This job growth is spreading to other renewable energy programs.
As always, we encourage your thoughts on this topic. Please feel free to contact us here.
The mission of The Ashkin Group is to transform industries with responsible, sustainable, business practices.
