Ashkin Calls for a Statement of Support on Sustainability

Helping to Make the Professional Cleaning Industry More Sustainability Focused

Bloomington, IN – Stephen Ashkin, long known as the “father of Green Cleaning,” announces that he is refocusing his efforts, working to bring more efficiency and sustainability programs into the professional cleaning industry.

“Green Cleaning has matured,” says Ashkin. “We are now able to move beyond just the benefits of Green [Cleaning] products to focusing on broader opportunities that will help drive additional human health and environmental benefits, as well as produce cost savings.”

These “broader opportunities” are where sustainability comes in. Ashkin says there are about 5,000 jansan distributor warehouses in the U.S. today, using 25,000 trucks to deliver Green and traditional cleaning products.

According to his calculations, each year these operations account for:

  • 700,000,000 kilowatt hours of electricity (enough to power 56,000 homes)
  • 2,800,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas (equal to 6,000,000 propane tanks used for home barbeques)
  • 640,000,000 gallons of water (enough to fill 1,000 Olympic swimming pools)
  • 53,000,000 gallons of fuel (enough for a truck to circle the Earth over 19,000 times)
  • 275,000,000 pounds of solid waste (comparable to the annual waste from 23,000,000 households)
  • 1,100,000 metric tons of CO2e (as much CO2e from 240,000 passenger vehicles driven for one year).

“Because of the enormity of these impacts, we are working jansan distributors so they can provide their customers with key performance indicators, indicating the progress they are making to bring sustainability initiatives into their businesses’ operations.

To assist them, Ashkin is also providing a “Sustainable Cleaning Industry Purchasing Tool,” which is available here.

“For purchasers, this will help differentiate between those jansan distributors that have sustainability programs in place and those that do not,” explains Ashkin.

Ultimately, he believes requesting this information from distributors will result in a better understanding of sustainability and the industry’s overall supply chain.

“It’s also a big win for distributors because it will help them operate their businesses more efficiency. That’s when the cost savings happens,” he concludes.
